The signs will help visitors of both Discovery School and the Discovery Museum better distinguish the two buildings and prevent future mix-ups. The signage also aims to solve a traffic safety issue preventing cars from mistakenly entering through the school’s exit.

“One of my sons goes to camp here, and the other goes to summer camp at Discovery Museum, so I am here every day,” said Finch. “Traffic is a big issue here, and this sign will help more clearly delineate where parents should enter and exit for the school compared to the museum. The sign here will keep our kids safe and shows off the natural elements that the school represents.”

The new large sign is 20 feet by 6 feet and is at the entrance drive to Discovery Magnet School. The sign was designed by the same architect, Svigals & Partners, that did the work for Discovery School.

The sign’s design resembles layers of Earth reflecting the math and science focus of the school. Discovery School is science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM, school that serves about 500 children in grades prekindergarten through eight. The new school was finished during the 2011-12 school year.

Enrollment is open to students ages 3-13 with a targeted mix of 70 percent urban and 30 percent suburban students. It serves students from Bridgeport, Easton, Fairfield, Milford, Monroe, Shelton, Stratford and Trumbull.

The school is also LEED Gold-certified, meaning it is a facility built and operated in a way that supports the health and well-being of occupants, its neighbors and saves energy, resources and money.

The new signage is a part of Finch’s goals for school construction upgrades across the city. Under the mayor’s plan, 13,000 students in the city will attend new or renovated schools in the near future. By the time the initiative is completed, the city and state will have invested $725 million in new and renovated schools for kids.
