Bridgeport Math Student Scores First In The Country At Math Contest

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. -- Ninth-grader Shubham Singh is known as a math whiz at Fairchild Wheeler Interdistrict Magnet High School in Bridgeport. But he didn't need to use his computing skills to determine his place at MathCON: First in the nation.

Anubhav Dhar, left, and Shubham Singh are both students in the Aerospace/Hydrospace Engineering and Physical Sciences School at Fairchild Wheeler Magnet High School in Bridgeport.

Singh finished in first place in the freshmen category at MathCON, a prestigious academic competition hosted by Concept Schools in Chicago. His prizes included an iPAD Mini and a medal.

His classmate, Anubhav Dhar, a 10th-grader also from Fairchild Wheeler, finished in 12th place nationally among all sophomore competitors. Both are students in the Aerospace/Hydrospace Engineering and Physical Sciences School at Fairchild Wheeler.

“We’re incredibly proud when any of our students earns recognition for their accomplishments, and we’re so excited that Shubham Singh and Anubhav Dhar represented ... so well at MathCON,” said Jay Lipp, school principal. “The STEM fields are such an important part of the future, and we actively encourage our teachers and students to find fun ways to use STEM inside and outside of the classroom. This is a great honor not only for Shubham and Anubhav but also for the Aerospace/ Hydrospace Engineering and Physical Sciences School.”

Singh and Dhar beat out more than 45,000 from across 50 states to qualify for 700 spots at MathCON, which was held last month.

The goal of MathCON is to challenge students academically and to promote high-quality STEM education.

The daylong event brought together elementary and high school students to compete for cash prizes and national prestige through various math questions and activities.

The two Fairchild Wheeler students were invited to complete the competition’s final test of 50 test items. They did not know how they placed until they returned the second day to learn of their thrilling finishes.

Singh of Shelton said he began taking algebra in eighth grade along with most of the other students at Shelton Intermediate School. Dhar started with Algebra I in seventh grade and Algebra II in eighth grade in Trumbull.

Both enrolled at Fairchild Wheeler because of its focus on math, science, and engineering and the opportunities they could gain in the Aerospace/Hydrospace Engineering and Physical Sciences School.

Both were able to attend the event in Chicago because of a GoFundMe.com page set up to defray expenses. It generated the $1,500 needed.

Fairchild Wheeler Math Club is continuing to collect funds to support and help fund its efforts, including math contest registration fees and travel expenses, for next year. To make a donation, visit this website
