“Having two respected incumbent office holders leaving a two-term mayor to join my ticket says a lot,” Ganim said in an announcement in front of City Hall Monday afternoon. “It means they share my vision for Bridgeport and its neighborhoods. It shows that they trust my leadership and no longer want to be affiliated with the current two-term administration.”
Hudson, a former board of education president and longtime education and Democratic activist, has served the longest tenure in citywide elected office, according to Ganim’s campaign.
Maya is serving her second term as Bridgeport town clerk. Founder of Aspira, a nonprofit focused on serving Latino youth that closed in 2011, Maya was the former executive director of the Connecticut Group. She is leader in the Latino community as well as an activist for education and civil rights, the campaign said.
Ganim is vying for the Democratic nomination along with incumbent Mayor Bill Finch and Mary-Jane Foster as well as Howard Gardner and Charles Coviello.
Although Ganim is often criticized for his criminal record, The Associated Press recently said, “[Ganim] is making a bid for a political comeback, and it's beginning to look like he may have a chance.”
Ganim, who was mayor of Bridgeport from 1991 to 2003, served more than seven years in federal prison after he was convicted of leveraging his position to receive kickbacks from city contractors for more than $500,000 in cash, meals, clothing, wine and home renovations.
