Former Bridgeport Mayors Line Up To Endorse Finch's Bid

BRIDGEPORT, Conn.  — Earlier this summer, former Mayors John Fabrizi, Tom Bucci and Leonard Paoletta joined current Mayor Bill Finch when he announced the addition of a luxury cineplex to Steelpointe Harbor in Bridgeport.

This week, those three mayors said they are throwing their weight behind Finch in this year’s hotly contested mayoral race.

“Under Mayor Finch, these reforms have taken hold,” Fabrizi, who was mayor from 2003 to 2007, said in a statement. “He’s making smart, honest investments in the future. He’s creating jobs at Steelpointe Harbor and across the city.”

Fabrizi echoed a slogan Finch uses at nearly every event: “Bridgeport’s getting better every day,” he added.

Bucci -- who served as chief executive from 1985 to1989 -- also noted that Bridgeport is moving forward.

“As a former mayor, I support Mayor Finch’s efforts to rebuild a better Bridgeport and his vision for an even better future,” said Bucci.

Paoletta -- a former state representative who served as mayor from 1981 to 1985 -- noted that progress on Steelpointe is back on track, a key reason for his support for the incumbent.

“I’m not a Democrat and don’t have a vote in this primary. But I am a Bridgeport supporter," Paoletta said. "If I had a vote in this primary, it would go to Bill Finch. ... With a positive track record on development, it is not the time to gamble with the untested and the tested who have failed.”

Several high-profile politicians have recently announced their support for Finch’s election campaign, including U.S. Sens. Richard Blumenthal and Chris Murphy, U.S. Rep. Jim Himes, and Connecticut Attorney General George Jepsen.

The Bridgeport firefighters union also endorsed Finch, but the police union is backing rival Democratic candidate Joe Ganim.

FInch has earned the endorsement of the Democratic Party but is expected to face a primary challenge in September from Ganim, who served seven years in federal prison after he was convicted of corruption and fraud charges.
