At 10 p.m. Sunday, Bridgeport police responded to a convenience store on Washington Avenue on a domestic dispute call. A woman reported she had been pistol-whipped with a firearm, police said in a statement.

Officers, who received a description of the suspect's vehicle and driver, pulled over a car on Coleman Street, police said. The vehicle stopped and officers approached the car, which was driven by a black man wearing a green camouflage jacket, police said. But as officers approached, the driver sped off, police said.

Bridgeport police officers followed the vehicle on Route 8/25 and onto Interstate 95 southbound, police said. The vehicle left I-95 at Exit 16 in Norwalk. police said. At that time, Norwalk police assisted in stopping the vehicle.

The suspect, later identified as Tracey Edwards, 41, of 51 Meadowlark Drive, fled on foot after crashing his car and was apprehended a short time later by Norwalk officers, police said.

He was charged by Bridgeport police with reckless driving, engaging police in pursuit and operating with a suspended license. In Norwalk, he was charged with interfering with an officer, two counts of evading responsibility, failure to bring motor vehicle to a full stop, engaging in a pursuit and reckless driving, thehour.com reported

“The community immediately provided our officers with information,” said Bridgeport Police Chief Joseph L. Gaudett Jr. “Officers took that information and were able to take a dangerous person off of the street. It is another example of the community and police working together to keep Bridgeport safe.”
