The girls and their mother, Monique Turner, had moved in with him about a month ago, moving from their Bridgeport apartment because the toddlers had contracted lead poisoning, LoHud.com said.

Derran Morris, 23, pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder and first-degree assault charges Friday morning at his arraignment in Mount Vernon City Court in connection with the Wednesday incident, LoHud.com said.

Turner took the girls to Montefiore Mount Vernon Hospital, where Addison was pronounced dead, and Annalynn was transferred to Montefiore Hospital in the Bronx, where she underwent surgery, LoHud.com said.

Morris, who was alone with the girls when the injuries occurred, was living with his father in a basement apartment at 343 S. Third Ave. when Turner and the girls moved in, LoHud.com said.
