Troopers from Bridgeport conducted a traffic stop of a green Mazda shortly before 11:45 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 11 in the Darien rest area on I-95, when they found it parked crookedly. Police said that two men inside the car were “behaving nervously, which caught the attention of troopers.”

According to police, troopers approached the vehicle and began speaking with the two men, who couldn’t offer answers to simple questions. There were also evidence that the two had been using drugs.

Police said that they asked the driver, Maine resident Matthew Mason, 36, for consent to check him for contraband. During that check, troopers found that Mason was in possession of brass knuckles, marijuana and crack cocaine.

The subsequent search of the vehicle led to the seizure of 2.6 pounds of marijuana, 19.3 grams of crack cocaine and 13.7 grams of heroin, as well as drug paraphernalia.

Mason was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana with intent to sell, possession with intent and was cited for improper parking. He is currently being held and no return court date has been announced.
