BRIDGEPORT, Conn. -- The 3rd Annual John J. Lawrence MD Memorial Golf Tournament at Mill River Country Club raised more than $19,000 for the St. Vincent's College Student Nursing Scholarship Fund.
"This event provides essential financial support for students who want to pursue a career in healthcare but who do not have the resources to fund their education on their own," said Christie Boronico, dean of students at St. Vincent's College, in a press release. "Thanks to this scholarship fund, we were able to award $20,000 to seven deserving students last year. Without the generosity of tournament golfers and other donors, that would never have been possible. For that we are incredibly thankful."
Sponsors of the event included Bill and Gloria Paul, The Colleen Doyle Britt Education Fund, Brody Wilkinson PC, Joe and Pat Kasper, Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Center and Dr. Delia Manjoney.
The tournament honors the memory of Lawrence, who devoted his life to the service of others and remained active in his community, according to a press release. He was a teacher and mentor to many interns and young residents who began their careers at St. Vincent's and to many who lived and worked in the greater Bridgeport area, according to a press release.
He served as chief medical officer at St. Vincent's Medical Center from 1988 through his retirement in 2001 and served on many nonprofit boards, including the St. Vincent's College Board of Trustees.
