“This is phenomenal news, both for neighbors who will no longer have to look at this eyesore but also for a very special family who will be moving into a new home, hopefully sometime next year. I can’t wait for the ribbon cutting,” said Mayor Bill Finch.

“I am grateful that we can help a family realize their dream of home ownership and who want to raise their kids in the Park City. We are working hard to improve our parks, improve our schools and improve all our neighborhoods. This is one building block as Bridgeport gets better every day,” said Finch.

Habitat already has selected a family who will work hand-in-hand with volunteers to build a new house at the location.

On Wednesday, demolition crews will begin razing the old building.

“This is the first step in providing a family with their dream home,” said Bruce Berzin, co-president and chief operating officer at Habitat for Humanity of Coastal Fairfield County. “And this truly is a great family. They have a 14-year-old daughter who uses a wheelchair and currently they live in a second-floor apartment. They will help us build a completely handicapped-accessible new home.”

Habitat CFC works with people of all background, races and religions to build homes in partnership with families in need. Families commit to repay a zero-interest, 30-year mortgage and invest 500 hours of “sweat equity” into building their own home and other Habitat homes.

Since 1985, Habitat has built more than 180 homes for hard-working families in Bridgeport, Stratford and Stamford.

“Habitat has been a great partner with the city,” said Finch. “Together, we have helped change the lives of kids and families and changed neighborhoods, one house and one block at a time. We are using vacant lots and dilapidated properties and, through the great work of Habitat, transforming them into new homes with proud homeowners and good neighbors who work every day to make Bridgeport a better place to raise their families.”
