Robert Bowens, 34, pleaded guilty to one count of possession of a firearm by a previously convicted felon, and faces a maximum term of 10 years in prison, according to John H. Durham, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut.
The charge stems from an incident on April 22 when Bowens was stopped by state police while traveling on I-95 northbound in Bridgeport. Police said that Bowens tried to flee when troopers attempted to detain him, and that while struggling with troopers he produced a 9mm handgun.
Troopers were able to knock the gun from Bowens's hand, but he broke free, jumped into an SUV that had arrived at the scene, and fled, Durham said. He was eventually arrested on May 9.

Durham said that Bowens has a criminal history that includes state felony convictions for possession with intent to sell, criminal possession of a firearm, and forgery. He also has a prior federal conviction for possession of a firearm by a previously convicted felon, for which he was sentenced in May 2009 to 57 months in prison, followed by two years of supervised release. He was released from prison in June 2015, Durham said.
Bowens has been detained since his arrest, and is scheduled to be sentenced on Jan. 29 2018. In addition to the potential for 10 years in prison that he faces, he also faces additional prison time if he is found to have violated his supervised release.
