Jesenia Valentin, 29, who was driving, her daughter, Angelina Rodriguez, 9, and Asyria Ferrer, 14, died in the 4 a.m. accident between exits 3 and 2 on I-84 in Wawayanda N.Y., near the Pennsylvania border. Angelina was in the back seat, and Asyria was in the front passenger seat.

The victims were calling 911 for help after running out of gas when a tractor-trailer slammed into their car. The 911 operator heard the crash and a dog yelp before the phone went dead, according to the Daily Freeman.

Valentin’s Volkswagen Passat was stopped in the right driving lane with its flashers on when it was struck by a Freightliner tractor-trailer driven by 52-year-old Gino Ruggiero of Sugar Loaf, Penn. He wasn’t injured or immediately charged at the scene, state police said.

Two dogs were also killed in the crash.
