St. Patrick's Parade Prepares To Step Off In Bridgeport

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. --The Greater Bridgeport Saint Patrick’s Day Celebration Committee will be hosting its 34th Annual Saint Patrick’s Day Parade Thursday, March 17.

The parade will be led by Grand Marshal, Alanna Kabel of Bridgeport.

The marchers will travel through downtown Bridgeport, beginning at Harbor Yard up Broad Street to Fairfield Avenue and return to Harbor Yard via Main Street.

A number of events will celebrate the holiday:

Mass, 8 a.m., Saint Augustine Cathedralk Joseph Caggiano, S.T.D., D.D. Bishop of Bridgeport celebrated by the Most Reverend Frank Joseph Caggiano, Bishop of Bridgeport.

Flag raising, 9:15 .m., City Hall with Bridgeport Mayor Joseph P. Ganim.

Grand Marshal's breakfast, 10 a.m., Grand Ballroom, Bridgeport Holiday Inn.

Parade Kick-off, noon, with 2016 Grand Marshal, Alanna Kabel

Post parade luncheon and awards ceremony, 1:30 p.m., Grand Ballroom, Bridgeport Holiday Inn.

Grand Marshal Alanna Kabel is the youngest of seven children. Both her parents are from Valentia Island, County Kerry, Ireland

She took Irish step dancing from Peter Smith as a young child

Kabel took her first trip to Ireland at the age of six and has returned there eight additional times

She remembers going to the Ladies AOH with her mother in the basement of St. Peter’s Church, going to watch Irish Hurling at Seaside Park, and to the AOH picnics at the Knight’s of Columbus in Fairfield

Kabel marched in the very first Bridgeport parade with daughter Laura who was three at the time and with son Bill in a stroller.

Mae King, former grand marshal, was her Confirmation sponsor.

In 1993, the Connecticut Post named Alanna a “Woman of Substance” for her work with the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians, Mae King Division, Bridgeport.

She has been a member of the LAOH Mae King Division since 1982.

Kabel presently serves the Order as President.
