Connecticut's Biggest Labor Day Parade Steps Off In Newtown

NEWTOWN, Conn. — The state's largest Labor Day parade steps off at 10 a.m. Monday in Newtown, winding from the flagpole to Hawley School.

The theme of the 56th annual edition of the parade is the "Labor of Love." The Honorary Grand Marshal is Lee Paulsen, who has run the Faith Food Pantry for over 33 years. 

The parade includes marching bands, floats, candy for kids and politicians, including First Selectman Pat Llodra, Lt. Gov. Nancy Wyman, U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy and U.S. Rep. Elizabeth Etsy.

The parade starts on Main Street near Edmond Town Hall. It will take a left on Glover Avenue, to Queen Street, where it ends at Hawley School. 

Spectators can park at Big Y, Carluzzi's Market, Hawley School and St. Rose Of Lima, where a shuttle bus will pickup and drop off. No parking is allowed on the parade route.

Currituck Road will be one way starting at about 8 a.m.

The following roads will close at 9:30 a.m.:

  • Route 25/Main Street north of Johnnie Cake Lane/Mt. Pleasant to Sugar Street/Route 302
  • Glover Avenue
  • Queen Street between Glover and Church Hill Road
  • Church Hill Road north of Queen Street

To support the mission of Faith Food Pantry to provide for town residents in need, donations of dry goods and nonperishable items are accepted at the pantry from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesdays or 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursdays.
