BRIDGEPORT, Conn. -- Bridgeport Rescue Mission staff and volunteers will be out at area Stop and Shop food stores in coastal Fairfield County on Saturday to collect food donations in an effort to re-stock food pantry shelves through the Stuff-A-Truck food drive.

Stores in Fairfield, Bridgeport, Westport and Monroe are participating, and shoppers can drop off donations right at the store between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. The food pantry typically runs low on supply in the summer months, officials said.

"This event is a fun and easy way to ensure we have the food we need to provide hot meals and pantry bags for hungry men, women and children today and in the coming months,” said Terry Wilcox, executive director of Bridgeport Rescue Mission.

Donations will be used to prepare the meals the organization provides each day in its dining rooms, on its two Mobile Kitchens as well as for the Pantry Bags distributed daily to people in need, officials said. Items needed include canned soup and vegetables, tuna, beans, cold cereal, coffee, powdered drink mix, and macaroni and cheese, officials said.

“It’s been a difficult year for many of our city’s working-poor families and homeless individuals,” Wilcox said. “Many are having to choose between paying the rent or buying groceries."

These are the participating Stop and Shop:

  • Fairfield: Villa Avenue, Kings Highwa;
  • Bridgeport: Main Street
  • Westport: Post Road
  • Monroe: Monroe Turnpike.

Those who want to help are asked to bring bags of the items to their favorite Stop and Shop store or buy them when shopping for their own groceries.
