There aren’t many chiropractic offices/eclectic boutiques in the world, but there is one in downtown Bridgeport. Located at 181 State St., The Backstroke is the brainstorm of Dr. Jennifer Lynne, a licensed chiropractor with a degree from the University of Bridgeport.
“When I first wanted to open, I really wanted to be in the Arcade Building,” said Lynne, referring to the newly refurbished old hotel on Main Street. “They wanted more retail than professional offices so I came up with a plan to have a combination chiropractic office and nutrition, vitamin-type place and they loved it.”
But after management changes at the Arcade and two years passing by, Lynne opted for the space on State Street.
“I had worked on my business plan for two years so I was going to go for it anyway,” she said. “But I scrapped the supplement idea. I’m not a vitamin person, I’m a drive-through Taco Bell person.”
Hence the boutique. But Lynne says she couldn’t be happier with her decision.
“I have a great clientele,” she said. “A great deal of my business is with Bridgeport cops, and it is such an honor to be highly regarded by such a wonderful group of people.”
The chiropractor/entrepreneur said one of the main reasons for her thriving business is how she and her staff relate to their clients.
“I have a great product,” said the doctor. “People come here when they want to feel better. When you go to a doctor’s office, it’s so damn sterile. We have real people here. People who understand and don’t talk down to you. We don’t want our friends to survive; we want them to thrive.”
