FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. — Scattered thunderstorms will boom through the area as a crazy mix of tropical-like weather blankets Fairfield County on Thursday.

An Air Quality Alert remains in effect as hot, humid air sticks around with temperatures topping 87 degrees as the July heatwave continues across the area, according to the National Weather Service.

Thunderstorms starting after 3 p.m. could produce heavy rain, up to 2 inches in a short period of time. But those storms will be widely scattered.

Rainfall of this magnitude could cause flash flooding of urban, low-lying, and poor drainage areas, especially in the southern part of Fairfield County, the weather service warns.

On Friday, temperatures will soar to 90 degrees with bright sun after patchy fog before 9 a.m. There is a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 3 p.m.
