FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. — The skies were turning stormy early Saturday afternoon, with a threat of severe thunderstorms across Fairfield County for the start of the weekend, according to the National Weather Service.

An approaching front was bringing the chance of quick-moving storms starting in the afternoon and continuing through about 9 p.m. Saturday. The chance of precipitation is about 40 percent.

The storms could threaten the 6:37 p.m. post time for the 148th Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park in Nassau County on Long Island.

Some of the storms could be accompanied by small hail and dangerous, strong wind gusts, according to the National Weather Service.

The highest likelihood for the storms is from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, according to AccuWeather. Saturday's high temperature will climb to about 75 degrees.

It will clear up in time for a beautiful and breezy Sunday, with sunny skies and a high in the mid-70s.
