DERBY, Conn. -- Updated, 4:30 p.m.:  All lanes have reopened after what state police are now saying was a fatal crash in the area of exit 16 on Route 8 southbound in Derby.

A serious accident involving life-threatening injuries closed down part of Route 8 in Derby Saturday afternoon.

State police said that at around noon Route 8 southbound was closed at exit 16 due to an accident with life-threatening injuries. The accident required extrication, and the Life Star critical care helicopter service had been requested to the scene.

At around 3:30 p.m. the right lane of Route 8 southbound was re-opened at exit 16 while investigation into the accident continues.

According to the Department of Transportation, the Route 8 northbound exit 16 off ramp and the exit 16 on ramp were closed as of 4 p.m. because of the accident, which involved a tractor trailer.
