UPDATED: BRIDGEPORT, Conn. — Bridgeport residents were urged to avoid a big intersection in the city due to a major water main break Monday evening.

Residents on both sides of the street had running water late Monday, and it was not clear when the water would be restored.

Emergency crew from Aquarion Water Co. were on the scene late Monday, according to Mayor Joe Ganim. It was not clear how long service would be down, he said.

Geraldine R Johnson school may be closed Monday because there is no water, he said. Parents should check for a closure announcement on Tuesday morning.

Drivers are urged to avoid the intersection of Park and North Avenue "for the next few days," Ganim said. The intersection is closed, and traffic is being rerouted.

Anyone in the affected area that needs drinking water can get it from Aquarion by calling 203-337-5991.

Here are some of the affected intersections:

  • North Avenue and Park Avenue
  • North Avenue and Norman Street
  • Park Avenue and Lorraine Street
  • Pequonnock Street and Maplewood Avenue

Drivers were being told to seek alternate routes.

It was not clear when the water main break would be repaired.
