Students Impacted By Community Tour of Bridgeport

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- A tour of Bridgeport's South End neighborhood last month made an impact on social work students from Sacred Heart University.

The walking tour was led by social work professor Andrew Martinez as part of a “Community as a Campus” activity—an effort to move learning outside the classroom and into the community, according to a press release on the school's website.

Students learned about affordable housing and met with Fairfield stakeholders, including a Connecticut legal services attorney, real estate agent, tenant, councilwoman and more. The goal was to provide students with a wide range of perspectives.

Oppression also came into the discussion, as the youth sat in the living room of South End councilwoman Denese Taylor-Moye and discussed how that culture contributed to public policy.
