SHELTON, Conn. — Families at Sunnyside Elementary School are well on their way to funding a new playground, thanks to generous donations — and a principal willing to get into a dunking booth for a good cause.

As of last month, the school’s Parent-Teacher Organization has raised $13,000 towards a goal of $60,000 for the new state-of-the-art play space, which will be ADA compliant.

Eversource Energy donated $2,500 to the drive.

“The support from Eversource was what made us exceed our fundraising mark for 2017,” said Sunnyside School Principal Amy Yost.

Students at Sunnyside love their playground, but it has had its share of wear and tear over the years and needed an upgrade, so the PTO took the lead.

Support has been coming in from parents, community organizations and local businesses.

To celebrate the first year of fundraising, Yost recently volunteered to be dunked by her students in a massive dunk tank in the gymnasium.

The top 10 student fundraisers and the 10 who completed the most acts of kindness all tried their hand at sending Yost into the drink.

“I’m always up for having fun with the students,” the principal said. “We want them to be able to have a good time and enjoy this process.”

Sunnyside Elementary School PTO President Jessica Scerbo and PTO member Katie Dansereau spearheaded the fundraising initiatives. They were amazed to see how well the students worked together while remembering to stay kind.

Students helped at local shelters, gave toys to children’s hospitals and got involved in their communities.

“We have a small elementary school, but our students have made such a huge impact,” said Scerbo. “We’re very proud of that.”

The school hopes to build the new playground in the spring.
