Motorists and residents should be on the lookout as the buses hit the roads and as kids begin hiking off to classes.
School kicks off Thursday, Aug. 27, for all Bridgeport Public School students.
One major project undertaken this summer was the new roof at Bassick High School, which cost over $1 million.
“This project, though to some may seem small, is huge for us,” Superintendent Fran Rabinowitz said in a press release. “Our kids deserve this, and I know it’s part of a bigger project that’s going on throughout the city and making our schools wonderful refuges for all of our students.”
Work on the school's observatory dome will be finished in December, weather permitting.
Also this summer, the city unveiled new signs at Discovery Interdistrict Magnet School. The signs will help visitors distinguish the Discovery School and the Discovery Museum and keep cars from entering through the school’s exit.
The new large sign is 20 feet by 6 feet and is at the entrance drive to Discovery Magnet School. It is a science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM, school that serves about 500 children in grades prekindergarten through eight. The school was finished during the 2011-12 school year.
Under the a plan to rebuild and improve the city's schools, 13,000 students in the Bridgeport will attend new or renovated schools in the near future. By the time the initiative is completed, the city and state will have invested $725 million in new and renovated schools.
