According to Marlene Siegle, the district's chief financial officer, the account used to pay health insurance claims will be used to cover $2.3 million of the shortfall, with the other money coming from hiring freezes, filling some teacher vacancies with substitutes, freezing travel and discretionary spending and cutting utility and facilities cost, said the Connecticut Post.
Interim Schools Superintendent Fran Rabinowitz said much of the deficit was caused by a spike in special education costs, collective bargaining agreements for employees, increases in transportation costs and other items, added the Connecticut Post.
