BRIDGEPORT, CONN. -- Young cadets from the Bridgeport Military Academy recently participated in their very first drill meet, school officials said.

According to retired Navy Capt. Bill Glass, an instructor at the school, they took home a trophy for outstanding sportsmanship.

The meet, which was held Saturday, Nov. 21, at Bethel High School in Bethel drew hundreds of cadets from 19 other schools around the region.

Thirty BMA cadets competed for honors in the following categories: unarmed drill, color guard, academic team, and marksmanship.

Students at the academy on Iranistan Avenue explore careers in public safety and the military. They are trained in areas such as: CPR, first aid, FEMA, and 911 communications.

They are given physical training and take part in community volunteering and internships.

“I am very proud of each and every cadet. The competition was tough and for a first time entrant, we performed extremely well,” said Glass, the unit's senior Naval science instructor.

“We’ll be back next year even stronger and ready to compete at the highest levels,” he added.
