FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy is taking a long stroll across Connecticut, and could be in Fairfield County by the end of the week.

Murphy, a first-term Democrat, started his walk Monday in Voluntown and plans to head west. "I'm excited to hear from people across the state, stop into local businesses and get some great ideas to bring back to Washington,'' Murphy said on Twitter.

On Monday, Murphy reached the Greenville Fire Station in Norwich around 7:30 p.m. He could be in Fairfield County on Thursday or Friday.

"Picking up the pace" Tuesday, Murphy said at the end of his Monday walk.

Murphy could be in for a tough couple of days weather-wise. Temperatures are expected to be in the mid 80s on Tuesday and Wednesday, and there is a chance of thunderstorms on Thursday.

"There is nothing like summertime in Connecticut,'' Murphy said. "I decided to spend part of my summer walking the state because I couldn't think of a better way to meet people and see things I probably wouldn't have otherwise.

"Since I was elected to Congress, I've been trying to find new ways to keep in touch with the people who sent me to Washington, and this is just another way that I can get some new ideas to bring back to Congress while also getting some great exercise. Who knows how far I will get this week, but I'm going to have fun for as long as my legs allow it.”

One other drawback could be blisters. "I'm a little unsure how far I'll make it but we will see how this goes,'' Murphy said on Twitter. "There's a chance that blisters will get the best of me."

Murphy has made a name for himself in the Senate as an advocate for gun control reform. He led a 15-hour filibuster in the Senate in June on the topic, and he launched a blistering attack on Republicans and presidential candidate Donald Trump on the topic in a speech before the Democratic National Convention. More recently, he called on Trump to release his tax returns .
