BRIDGEPORT, Conn.-- The Greater Bridgeport NAACP is upset about a statement by state Rep. Charles Stallworth, saying the election of Joe Ganim would be the local equivalent of the Emancipation Proclamation, according to the ctpost.com.

George Mintz, president of the local NAACP branch, called the statement “outrageous,” but said that more important issues are at stake during next week’s mayoral election, said the ctpost.com.

Mintz said the local NAACP chapter wants to focus on getting as many people to vote as possible, not on the statement about Ganim, said the ctpost.com.

Ganim, the Democratic nominee for mayor, served over seven years in federal prison after he was convicted for corruption and bribery charges during his earlier tenure as mayor.

The Emancipation Proclamation, signed by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863, freed the slaves.
