Ganim claimed victory shortly before 9 p.m. Tuesday as unofficial results showed him ahead of his two main opponents, Independent candidate Mary Jane Foster and Republican Enrique Torres.

Ganim served as mayor of the city from 1991 to 2003, when he was convicted on federal corruption charges and served seven years in prison.

Chants of "Let's go, Joe!" could be heard throughout Ganim's headquarters at Testo's Restaurant in Bridgeport. Supporters played "Eye of the Tiger" while they posted early results showing Democratic candidate Ganim ahead of the six other candidates vying in the mayoral race.

"We did it, baby, we did it! Redemption is real!" said Ernie Newton, a former state senator from Bridgeport who was convicted on federal corruption charges in 2005.
