“Regardless of party affiliation, as your mayor, I represent everyone in Bridgeport,” Finch said in a letter to supporters. “Bridgeport, you still have an honest mayor who intends to keep the future bright for Bridgeport.”
Hardly a surprise to many, Finch was forced to join a third-party ticket after losing Wednesday night’s Democratic primary to former Mayor Joe Ganim, who served over seven years in prison on a corruption conviction. The Job Creation party is widely believed to have been created for Finch in the event he should lose the primary.
The original candidate for the Job Creation party dropped off the ticket just days after he joined, the CT Post reported.
In his letter, Finch said that he was concerned about the prospect of Ganim's taking office.
“I remain concerned as a Bridgeport resident about the future of our city, and the corruption that so badly has held our city back for far too long,” Finch said of Ganim, who was convicted on 16 federal corruption charges related to his job a mayor. “I’m worried that job creators and investors will stop investing in our city with the poster child of corruption at the helm.”
Finch will face off against fellow Democrat Ganim as well Democrat Mary-Jane Foster should she, too, run on a third-party ticket this November after losing in Wednesday's primary.
They will face Republican Enrique Torres and independents Tony Barr, Charles Coveillo, David Daniels and Christopher Taylor in the general election in November.
The final vote tally in Wednesday's primary, according to the Connecticut Post, was:
- Ganim: 6,264 votes
- Finch: 5,859 votes
- Foster: 1,177 votes
