BRIDGEPORT, Conn. — One woman died and two other residents were hospitalized after a fire destroyed a house early Sunday in Bridgeport, according to city spokeswoman.

The Bridgeport Fire Department was dispatched to the home at 335 Seltsam Road at about 1:30 a.m. Sunday, July 23, according to a statement from Bridgeport spokeswoman Rowena White.

Three residents were in the home at the time of the fire — a mother and father and their adult daughter,  White said.

One the women had died from injuries due to the fire, she said.

The other two residents were transported to the hospital by AMR ambulances, White said.

Smoke alarms alerted the family, the Connecticut Post said. But one of the women ran back inside the house to try to rescue their dogs, and she later died as did both of the pets, the Post said.

The blaze in the burning house was so intense that the home's shed and foliage on either side of the structure were damaged by the flames, she said. Bridgeport fire crews worked quickly to contain the blaze from spreading to the nearby neighboring homes, she said.

No firefighters were injured in the overnight blaze.

The Bridgeport Fire Department and Fire Marshal were on the scene Sunday morning to investigate, Fire Chief Richard Thode said.
