Thode, a 30-year veteran of the Bridgeport Fire Department, had served as provisional fire chief since Brian Rooney retired last May. He was sworn in by Mayor Joe Ganim on a busy Friday, just before city officials held a press conference on the safe return of an abducted 6-year-old girl and the arrest of her father, who is a suspect in the early morning stabbing of her mother in Bridgeport.

Rooney, a 44-year BFD veteran, had been chief since 2005.
