The police department released updated information on Sunday that contradicted earlier reports, according to a statement from Bridgeport Police Capt. Brian Fitzgerald.

original story: BRIDGEPORT, Conn. — A woman was shot to death near a grocery store in Bridgeport late Saturday, according to the Connecticut Post.

The woman was taken to the hospital and declared deceased after the shooting at 9:15 p.m., city spokesman Av Harris told the Post.

Alexander Davis, 23, died Jan. 1 from gun wounds he suffered in a Dec. 16, 2016 shooting. There were 10 murders in Bridgeport in 2016, the lowest figure in decades, and a drop from the 19 killed in 2015.

This was the second homicide of the year in Bridgeport. The first occurred on New Year's Day when a 23-year-old Bridgeport man died — three weeks after he was shot while walking on a city street, according to police.

Alexander Davis was struck by gunfire near Brooks Street and Jane Street on Dec. 11, police said. He had been in Bridgeport Hospital since the shooting.

The Office of Chief Medical Examiner ruled that Davis's death was a homicide.

Bridgeport ended 2016 with 10 homicides, down from 19 in 2015. The last homicide of last year occurred early on Christmas Eve when a 27-year-old man was shot to death on North Avenue. A Christmas Eve homicide also occurred in 2015, when a teenager who was an innocent passerby was shot to death when caught in gunfire.
