Investigators from the New Canaan Police Department received a complaint on March 3, 2017 from a Carter Street resident, who reported that his Audi Q5 had been parked in the driveway, unlocked with the key inside, and it had been stolen overnight.

The vehicle was later recovered be Connecticut State Police troopers when it was found abandoned on Route 8 in Waterbury, prompting an investigation by members of the New Canaan Police Investigative Section, who processed the stolen vehicle for DNA and fingerprints.

Police said that on Oct. 18 last year, the State Forensic Laboratory confirmed a positive DNA hit that matched Waterbury resident Jose Diaz, 19, which led to a warrant for his arrest.

On Tuesday, April 17, officers from the New Canaan Police Department arrested Diaz, charging him with first-degree grand larceny, a felony. Following processing, Diaz is being held in lieu of $75,000 bond. He is due back in New Canaan Justice Court on Wednesday to answer the charge.

“The New Canaan Police Department continues to remind residents that these crimes are preventable and unless residents take preventive steps to lock their vehicles and not leave keys inside of their cars, these crimes will continue to occur.”
