Mario Chavez, formerly of Washington Avenue in Bridgeport, was detained this month in Miami on a fugitive from justice warrant, police said. He is charged with murder in the fatal stabbing of 23-year-old Francisco Barbosa-Vega in the 500 block of Arctic Street on May 27, 2012.

According to witnesses, Barbosa-Vega intervened in a fight between two individuals and was stabbed in the chest.

Barbosa-Vega was on the porch of a house when two males got out of a car and one of the males began assaulting the other, witnesses told police.

He ran from the porch and separated them, witnesses said. Chavez then got out of the car and stabbed Barbosa-Vega in the chest, police said.

Bridgeport police secured an arrest warrant on a charge of murder in 2012, but Chavez had fled the state. He was arrested in Florida on Dec. 5 on a fugitive warrant and was extradited, police said.

Lt. Christopher Lamaine conducted the Bridgeport police investigation.
