On Oct. 8, 2015, Sawicki responded to multiple 911 calls reporting a man lying in the median of the northbound Interstate 95 near the exit 27 off ramp, officials said.
When he arrived, Sawicki saw a man across the highway attempting to climb over the concrete barrier with a 75-foot drop beneath, officials said. Sawicki rushed to the man's aid without putting on any personal protective equipment — putting himself at risk — to save the man right before he could attempt to jump off the overpass, officials said. The rescue exposed Sawicki to the man's blood from a knife wound across his neck, but he and troopers treated the man's heavy bleeding until EMS arrived, officials said.
The Lifesaving Award is outlined as being "presented to those who save a human life or make a valiant attempt to save a life."
