Michael T. Walsh, 37, of 742 Evergreen Terrace, is charged with criminal possession of a firearm, possession of a weapon in a motor vehicle and interfering with police. Bond was set at $100,000, and his first scheduled court date is Feb. 5.

The incident began when the Narcotics and Organized Crime Squad received a tip Thursday that a man driving a black Honda Civic with red rims had a silver handgun and would be in the area of 864 Cove Road in Stamford, police said.

At 5:15 p.m. Thursday, Narcotics and Organized Crime Squad officers and uniformed officers took up surveillance positions in the area and soon after spotted the vehicle, police said. The driver was seen pulling into a parking space at 864 Cove Road, the location of Cove Pizza, police said.

After being told to move in, officers blocked the vehicle and ordered the driver to show his hands, police said. The man didn't obey, and officers could see that he had a handgun in his hand and that he appeared to be throwing bullets out of the car, police said. The man also opened and closed his door a number of times, police said.

After a couple of minutes, officers were able to get the man out of the car, police said.

Police said Walsh has used several different names in the past and has an extremely long criminal record. His record includes convictions for weapons violations, assaults, sexual assaults, child porn, threatening, narcotics violations and probation violations, among others. Walsh has served several prison sentences, police said.

Capt. Richard Conklin praised the officers for using extreme restraint in a potentially violent incident and making an arrest without any injuries.
