The Police Unity Tour is a 300-mile, multi-day bike ride. Gonzalez will be riding in memory of Bridgeport Officer Gerald T. DiJoseph, who was shot and killed while making a traffic stop in 1980.

"I'm riding and honoring those who didn't get to see another day and I'm riding for the family," Gonzalez said.

Nearly lost an officer close to her in 1985, when her father was shot while serving a drug warrant with the FBI. He survived, and his experiences helped propel Sandy into law enforcement.

"I'm thankful that I can do this and give back to those who lost everything. I'm not looking for a pat on the back or applause, I just want to honor those that sacrificed their lives for others."
