Saint Michael had been diagnosed with a rare form of cancer during the first week of April.

Saint Michael had been with the Newtown Police Department since 2014, serving the community with his handler, Officer Felicia Figol.

He was trained in narcotic detection, suspect tracking and apprehension, police said.

"While K9 Saint had recently been diagnosed with cancer, he was very playful and in great spirits," police said.

"We sincerely believed with the right treatment plan and with his great physical condition, his life could have been extended for at least a year if not more, so with that said, today was not expected."

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to Officer Figol and the other officers who have worked with Saint and grown to love him," police said.

The end watch for K9 Saint Michael was April 16, 2017.

A GoFundMe campaign was established to collect donations to help cover the K9 officer's medical costs. Click here to make a donation.
