The van had been stolen from the Ruby Lane driveway of the McDowell family in the early morning hours of Friday, Jan. 6. The family uses the van to transport son Jamie, who has cerebral palsy, to doctor appointments and local sporting events.
In response to the theft, a GoFundMe had been set up to purchase a new van for the family, who had been forced to rely on Metro Taxi. However, Jamie's father James told the Stratford Star Friday that Bridgeport Police had recovered the van in the city's north end on Thursday.
The van had sustained some damage to the steeling column and the ignition had been taken out, but it still functions, the Stratford Star reported.
The GoFundMe had raised nearly $8,000 to help the family purchase a new van, according to the Stratford Star. McDowell told the Stratford Star that he is thankful for all the support the family received, and that he planned to return all the money raised.
