FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- A former ABM employee was arrested on charges of assaulting his girlfriend -- a current Fairfield University employee -- at the Dolan Residence Hall on campus on Monday, March 2, police said.

ABM is an outsourced custodial service that works under contract at the university, according to Martha Milcarek, assistant vice president for brand management and public relations for Fairfield University.

Fairfield police officers were called to the scene after the university’s Department of Public Safety reported that Carlos Maldonado, 28, of Black Rock Avenue, Bridgeport, struck the woman in the face, causing her to bleed from the nose, police said.

According to the police report, the altercation began over the phone when Maldonado called his girlfriend to complain that she had taken his cellphone to work instead of hers. The victim soon learned there was evidence on Maldonado’s phone that he had been cheating on her, police said.

Maldonado was somehow able to gain access to the building, which requires a university identification card to enter, police said. He began to argue with the victim, and that soon became physical, police said.

A former employee of ABM, he was terminated in June 2011 and asked not to return to the campus, according to authorities.

Video surveillance of the altercation was given to Fairfield Police to aid in the investigation.

Maldonado was charged with breach of peace and third-degree assault. He was released on $5,000 bond and was due in court on March 3.
