The fire was reported at 6:45 a.m. Monday, Oct. 16, at 403 Post Road E., Cohen said.

When the Westport Fire Department responded to an activated fire alarm at Olympia Sports, they found an odor of burning at the rear of the structure, he said.

The alarm was upgraded to a structure fire response, adding additional personnel and apparatus, Cohen said.

Fire department personnel forced the front door and made entry to the sporting goods store.

Firefighters found a small fire burning in the rear of the store in a bathroom, he said.

The fire was quickly extinguished, and the blaze was isolated to the bathroom ceiling, Cohen said.

Firefighters worked to remove residual smoke from the building.

The scene was turned over the Fire Marshal’s Office for an investigation at 7:33 a.m. Monday.
