William Donofrio, 25, of Shelton was arrested on March 9 and charged with evading responsibility, tampering with physical evidence and failure to exercise due care to avoid colliding with a pedestrian. The charges stem from a May 11, 2016 incident where 54-year-old Teresa Glossy of Shelton was struck by a vehicle at the intersection of Howe Avenue and Hill Street. She was taken to St. Vincent's Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead, police said.

The Valley Independent Sentinel reported that Donofrio's arrest warrant revealed that police were tipped off that he was responsible by an anonymous caller. When they went to his home to investigate, they found that the car involved in the accident had been cleaned up and hidden, according to the Valley Independent Sentinel.

Glossy's family has started a Change.org petition to ensure that Donofrio receives the maximum sentence. In their petition, they say that Donofrio did nothing to help Glossy after his car hit her.

"He made a decision to leave her there to die. He did not stop, he did not try to help her, he didn't call 911," the petition reads.

Donofrio told police that he had been unable to avoid the accident when Glossy darted in front of his vehicle, and that he had panicked and driven home, the Valley Independent Sentinel reported.

Donofrio has faced legal trouble in the past, the Valley Independent Sentinel reported. He was charged with a DUI in 2013, and in December 2016 he was arrested on burglary charges, the Valley Independent Sentinel said. The burglary case is still pending.
