Shaheed Jamal Poole, 27, of Berkeley Road, aroused suspicion when he entered a Subway restaurant near the Tunxis Hill Road department store and asked for a pair of scissors, police said.

Officers stopped him around 9:45 p.m. when he left the Subway wearing the black leather jacket and holding a new pair of Under Amour sneakers, police said.

Poole, who was carrying a backpack, also had a Marvel Comics baseball cap, socks and a mesh T-shirt, among other merchandise totaling about $294, police said.

Poole, who initially gave a fake name, was charged with sixth-degree larceny and interfering with an officer, police said. He also was arrested on outstanding warrants for second-degree failure to appear and failure to respond, police said.

He was held on a total of $1,600 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on March 20 and March 22, police said.
