BRIDGEPORT, Conn. -- Bridgeport firefighters battled a large blaze at the empty AIG Rubber factory on Stratford Avenue on Wednesday afternoon.
Stratford Avenue was closed while the Bridgeport Fire Department responded to the scene. Residents were asked to stay clear of the area as firefighters tackled the blaze in the long-vacant building.
The heavy smoke from the fire could be seen from I-95 and across the greater Bridgeport area.
Firefighters did not enter the building, which has been the scene of multiple fires since it was abandoned in 2014, NBC Connecticut reported.
The blaze was reported just after 4 p.m. and was under control by 4:45 p.m., according to NBC Connecticut.
Roads reopened in the area about three hours later.
The cause of the fire was under investigation late Wednesday.
