At 9:45 p.m. July 12, a 911 caller reported the dump truck had crossed the double yellow line and nearly hit oncoming vehicles, police said.
Multiple callers reported that the truck went off the road on Route 58 just south of Burr Street but did not strike anything, police said.
Officers enroute to the area found the dump truck, which was disabled in the soft southbound shoulder of the roadway, facing north, police said.
The headlamps of the dump truck were on and the engine was running, police said. The rear wheels of the truck were spinning in reverse as the driver tried to free it, police said.
The front end was wedged against a large rock on the shoulder, police said.
Officers detected the strong odor of alcohol on the driver, John Warfield, 48, of Branford, police said.
Warfield also failed to perform several sobriety tests, police said.
He was arrested and charged with operation of a commercial motor vehicle under the influence and failure to keep right on a curve.
Warfield was released on $500 cash bond for a court appearance on July 25.
