Officers said Miguel Alvarez, 32, or Brentwood Avenue, used a personal scanner while he was shopping, but neglected to scan $198.59 in items he placed in his cart. He did pay for $120 at a checkout counter, police said.

Alvarez told officers the scanner must have malfunctioned, but he was charged with sixth-degree larceny, police said.

He was released on a promise to appear in court on April 25.
