Felix Rivera, 52, of North Avenue, was crossing the street near 615 North Ave. when he was struck by a dark red Chevrolet SUV driven by a black female traveling north just after 9 p.m., police said.

The SUV fled down Housatonic Avenue with witnesses following, but the driver was traveling at a high rate of speed, disobeying traffic signals, and was able to elude capture, police said.

Rivera was first transported to St. Vincent’s Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition with a skull fracture, significant brain trauma and a fractured pelvis, police said. It had been initially reported that the victim had died in the crash.

The front grill of the SUV was left in the roadway next to the victim, police said.

Any witnesses or anyone with information is asked to call Bridgeport Police at 203 576-TIPS (8477). Officer John Perry is the lead investigator.
