Hector Sanchez, 35, of Roger Williams Road, was charged with two counts of possession of narcotics, misuse of plates, driving an unregistered vehicle and lack of insurance during the 4:30 p.m. stop, police said.
When officers stopped Sanchez, he said he had just bought the car, police said.
When he stepped out of the car and was patted down, a prescription bottle fell from his pants, police said. Inside, officers found 11 wax folds containing suspected heroin and a small straw, police said.
The substance tested negative for heroin or methamphetamine on the scene and it was sent to a lab for further testing, police said.
Sanchez posted a $500 bond on the criminal charge and is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 28, police said.
