UPDATED at 11 a.m. BRIDGEPORT, Conn. — A total of 12 adults and nine children were displaced by a fire Wednesday morning at 511 Berkshire Ave., the Bridgeport Fire Department said in a statement.
At 6:43 a.m., firefighters responded to a call regarding smoke in the area of Berkshire Avenue and Pembroke Street.
At the scene, firefighters found heavy fire on all three floors at the rear of a multi-family home at 511 Berkshire Ave.
Four residents get out of the building shortly after firefighters arrived, the statement said.
Firefighters then performed a search of the building and found no one inside.
Firefighters fought the blaze from the inside for a time until crews had to be pulled out for an exterior operation due to smoke, a statement said.
Once the blaze was under control, firefighters returned to the inside of the building to extinguish the remaining fire.
More than 30 firefighters were dispatched to tackle the fire.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
No injuries of civilians or firefighters were reported.
The American Red Cross is responding to help the residents.
The three-story house is near the Luis Marin School, which was not affected, according to the Connecticut Post .
