Ivan Rodriguez Mendez, a 51-year-old Bridgeport resident, was found dead in the street late Saturday in front of his house at 83 Seeley St., police said. His body was found in a large pool of blood, said police spokesman William Kaempffer. Police could not determine whether he had been shot or stabbed.

After an autopsy, the State Medical Examiner's office ruled that the cause of death was due to a stab wound.

No arrests have been made in the case, the 10th homicide of 2014 in Bridgeport.

Kaempffer said Mendez may have been involved in a fight. Officers responded to a call at 9:30 p.m. Saturday of an injured person in front of 83 Seeley St. in the city’s South End, he said.

When officers arrived, they found the victim lying in the road. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to witness reports, the victim had gotten into an altercation with other individuals, police said. At least one member of the group had a knife, police said, and shots were also fired in the middle of the residential neighborhood.

Anyone with information about the homicide is asked to contact Detective Hector Teixeira at 203-581-5256.
