The incident occurred Sunday afternoon at the Walmart on Bridgeport Avenue in Shelton, police said.

Three people — Monica Santos, 31, Trisha Donaldson, 27, and Luis Torres, 32, all from Bridgeport — entered the store and shoplifted about $800 worth of merchandise, police said.

Walmart employees attempted to stop them as they left the store, but Santos pulled a knife on the employees and the three fled in a green Volkswagen Passat, police said. Juan Torres, 30, and Vanessa Torres, 29, of Bridgeport, were inside the car, police said.

A Shelton patrol officer spotted the vehicle traveling south on Route 8 and stopped it near Exit 10 in Trumbull, police said.

All five were arrested and transported to the Shelton Police Department.

Monica Santos was charged with first-degree robbery, fifth-degree criminal attempt at larceny and interfering with an officer and held on $10,000 bond.

Luis Torres was charged with fifth-degree criminal attempt at larceny and held on $1,000 bond. Both are scheduled for arraignment at Derby Superior Court on Monday.

Juan Torres, Vanessa Torres and Trisha Donaldson were each charged with fifth-degree conspiracy to commit larceny and released on a promise to appear in Derby Superior Court on Jan. 5.
